The Same Logic, Applied to the Ground
Three-putts are a distance problem far more often than a line problem. So we fit putters the way we fit everything else here: measure the distance first, then adjust the club until it repeats.
Roll-Out at Fixed Stroke Lengths
The strip has markers on it. We ask for a stroke of a set length, repeatedly, and record how far the ball actually rolls. Then we do it again at a longer stroke, and again at a shorter one. What comes out is a small table: this stroke produces this distance, with this much variation.
That table is the diagnostic. A golfer whose eighteen-inch stroke produces anywhere between eighteen and twenty-eight feet does not have a line problem, and no amount of alignment aid will fix it. Head weight, shaft length and grip size all move that number, and moving it deliberately is what the session is for.
Length and Eye Position
Most putters sold off a rack are too long for the golfer holding them, which pushes the eyes inside the target line and changes both aim and stroke shape. We check eye position over the ball directly, and shortening a putter an inch is one of the most reliably useful adjustments in the whole studio.
Shortening also changes the swing weight, so head weight gets adjusted at the same time. Doing one without the other produces a putter that feels dead in the hands, which is why a rushed shortening job often makes things worse.
Head Weight and Green Speed
Heavier heads suit slower greens and shorter, more controlled strokes. Lighter heads suit faster surfaces where feel at low speed matters more. Public course greens around central Arkansas run a good deal slower in midsummer heat than they do in October, so we ask where and when you play most rather than fitting to a single reference speed.
Adjustable weighting on modern heads makes this straightforward to test, and we can supply alternate weights for putters that accept them.
Lie, Loft and Face Angle
A putter sitting toe-up or heel-up at address pushes the face open or closed at impact by an amount that gets significant beyond ten feet. Loft on a putter is a real specification too: too little and the ball is driven into the surface at the start of the roll, too much and it hops. Both are checked on the machine and both are adjustable on most heads.
Stroke Path Comes Last
We do look at arc and face rotation, and toe hang gets matched to what we see. But it comes after distance control, because a putter that matches your stroke shape and still leaves you eight feet past the hole has not solved the problem you actually have.
