What Goes Wrong in an Iron Set

Sets leave the factory matched within a tolerance. Then they get played. Turf contact bends hosels a fraction of a degree at a time, and it happens most to the clubs you hit most, which is exactly the middle of the set where even spacing matters.

Three or four seasons of ordinary play is routinely enough to open a two degree spread across a set that started matched. That does not feel like anything. It shows up as one club that flies a yard or two further than it should and another that comes up short, and the golfer quietly stops trusting both.

Measuring Before Bending

Every iron in the bag goes on the monitor individually, with enough balls per club to see a distribution rather than a single reading. That takes time, which is why the session is two hours and why we do not try to sell it as a ninety minute appointment.

Once the carries are plotted, the loft and lie machine tells us the static side of the story. The two together explain almost every uneven rung we find. Sometimes it is drift, sometimes it is a set that was never evenly lofted to begin with, and occasionally it is delivery rather than equipment, in which case bending will not fix it and we will say so.

Set Makeup Is a Real Decision

Most golfers carry a long iron they cannot use and are missing a club somewhere in the scoring range. We look at the top and bottom of the set as part of the session: whether the 4-iron actually holds a green, whether a utility or hybrid belongs on that rung instead, and whether the gap between the pitching wedge and the next wedge down is bigger than any other gap in the bag.

That last one is extremely common. Modern pitching wedge lofts have crept strong, and the club underneath frequently has not moved with them.

Length, Lie and Shaft

Length is set for strike quality, not for distance. Lie is set to bring the sole flat through impact at your delivery, which for a lot of golfers is not the same as what a static fitting board suggests. Shaft weight is stepped once the geometry is settled.

Frequency across the set gets checked at the end, because a set that steps evenly in frequency feels like one family of clubs. It is a small refinement compared to fixing the lofts, but it is the difference between a set that works and a set that feels right while it works.

Bending Beats Replacing

Eight dollars a club to bring a set back to a proper ladder compares favourably with replacing it. A large share of iron sessions end with bending, a length adjustment on one or two clubs, and a recommendation to revisit in a couple of seasons.
