How It Runs

An Hour and a Half, Stage by Stage

Nothing here is a secret and nothing is theatre. If you know what is coming, you spend the session thinking about your golf instead of wondering what the person with the clipboard is doing.

01

Baseline the Bag You Already Own

You warm up, then hit your own clubs. Not a sample of them, all of them, or as many as the session length allows. Every ball is recorded and we discard obvious mishits by agreement rather than quietly, so you can see exactly what is being counted.

At the same time the conditions go on the sheet: temperature, humidity and pressure from the studio instrument. This is the part most fitting rooms skip and it is the reason a page from here stays comparable across seasons.

Nothing is on the table to buy at this stage and nothing is being sized up. If you stop the session here, you still leave with a page worth having.

02

Draw the Ladder and Mark the Holes

The carries get plotted vertically, one rung per club, spacing written between them. It takes about ten seconds of looking to spot the two clubs sitting four yards apart and the twenty-yard hole three rungs lower.

We also plot descent angle alongside carry, because a rung that arrives too flat will not hold a green no matter how well spaced it is on paper. A club that carries the right distance but lands at twenty-eight degrees is solving one problem and creating another.

This is the conversation part of the session. It is also where most people realise the club they came in to replace was not the problem.

Test Only What Targets a Gap

Component selection follows the page. If the hole is nineteen yards wide at 205, we pull the two or three combinations that could plausibly land there and you hit those. We do not run you through a wall of drivers to see what happens.

Adjustable hosels get used properly here. Testing the same head at two loft settings inside one swing block is far more informative than comparing two different heads at their factory settings, and it costs nothing but a wrench turn.

Shaft weight is changed in deliberate steps rather than by profile name, because weight moves delivery more predictably than bend description does. Everything gets written down as we go.

Build It, Then Prove It

Assembly happens in our own back room, not at a distributor. Heads are weighed, shafts cut and tip-trimmed to the recorded spec, and the finished club goes on the loft and lie machine before anybody calls you.

Then it gets hit again. A build is not finished until it produces the carry number the page said it should, within a tolerance we will show you. If it misses, it goes back on the bench rather than into your bag.

You collect the clubs with the build sheet and the original ledger stapled together. Both are archived here too, so a recheck in three years starts from real data.

Ground Rules

Things We Will Not Do

  • Recommend anything before the ladder is on paper
  • Quote a distance based on the single best ball of a block
  • Gap a bag on total distance instead of carry
  • Sell a club that lands on a rung you already cover
  • Test range balls and describe the numbers as yours
  • Push a brand because the month has been slow
Fair Warning

Things You Might Not Enjoy

Some of what comes out of a session is unwelcome. A club you love may turn out to be redundant. A gap you were sure existed at the top of the bag may actually be in the wedges. And occasionally the honest answer is that the equipment is fine and the numbers are being set by strike quality, in which case we will say so and point you at a coach rather than a component.

We would rather hand over that answer than an invoice.

Afterwards

What You Take Home

The Printed Ledger

One page, every club, carry and descent recorded with the air conditions of the day noted at the top.

A Digital Copy

Emailed the same evening so you have it on the phone when you are standing over a shot wondering which club covers it.

An Archived Record

Held here indefinitely. Come back in three years and we can show you exactly what has drifted.

Book the First Stage

The Gap Audit is stages one and two on their own, at the lowest rate we charge. It is the honest place to start.
