Pilots have a term for this and golfers borrowed it: density altitude. It means the elevation the air is behaving like, given the actual temperature, humidity and pressure, rather than the elevation you are standing at. Hot, humid, low-pressure air behaves like a higher elevation. Cold, dry, high-pressure air behaves like a lower one.
The Counterintuitive Part
Most golfers believe humid air is heavy air and that the ball must fly shorter through it. It is the reverse. A water molecule is lighter than the nitrogen and oxygen molecules it displaces, so humid air is very slightly less dense than dry air at the same temperature. It flies marginally further, not shorter.
Humidity is a small effect on its own. Temperature is the big one, and it moves in the direction you would expect: hot air is thin, cold air is dense, and the ball travels accordingly.
What We Actually Record in Little Rock
The studio logs conditions at the start of every session. Across a full year the range we see looks roughly like this:

That is a ten yard spread on one club, across a season, from air alone. On a driver the same proportional effect works out closer to sixteen or seventeen yards.
Why It Wrecks a Gapping Decision
Suppose you get fitted on a hot August afternoon and your ladder gets built around numbers that are all four or five yards long. In October those numbers are gone, and the spacing decisions made on top of them no longer describe the bag you own. The gap you closed in August has reopened by Thanksgiving.
This is why every ledger written here is corrected to a common reference density. It is not a precision exercise, it is a comparability exercise. Two pages recorded six months apart should describe the same bag, and without correction they will not.
Practical Rules for Play
- Under about 45°F, take an extra club on approaches. The loss is real and larger than you expect on the longer clubs.
- Over about 90°F, expect a modest gain, mostly on the longer clubs where flight time is longest.
- Ignore humidity as a separate factor. It is inside the temperature effect and it works the opposite way to what people assume.
- Cold ball temperature matters separately and is worth more than the air. Keep a spare in a pocket in winter and rotate.
